Wisteria Flower is traditionally used in workings for wisdom, longevity, endurance, and grace. Three Gazes of Medusa — Defender of Sovereignty Spell Candle Wrap
Medusa, the famous Gorgon of Greek mythology, has become a powerful modern symbol of sovereignty, boundaries, protection, and righteous fury. Yet the Medusa depicted in this original artwork reaches beyond the familiar Roman story of a beautiful woman transformed into a monster. In Hesiod’s much earlier Theogony, Medusa is a Gorgon by birth, daughter of the ancient sea divinities Phorkys and Keto and granddaughter of Gaia and Pontos—Earth and Sea. Of the three Gorgon sisters, Medusa alone is mortal, yet her terrible power survives even death.
Her image became one of the ancient Mediterranean world’s most recognizable apotropaic emblems. The gorgoneion, the staring face of the Gorgon, appeared upon temples, armor, jewelry, vessels, and funerary monuments as an image intended to avert danger: a terrifying guardian whose unwavering gaze turns threatening forces away.
This original candle-wrap design by Heron Michelle draws upon that ancient protective symbolism while developing Medusa through a modern Witchcraft and Hermetic framework as The Gorgon, Defender of Sovereignty.
Medusa appears in three aspects, each associated with a different magical intention and planetary influence:
Allure • Venus • Choice, the sovereign power to choose how we are seen and whom we welcome into our sphere;
Command • Saturn • Authority, the power to establish boundaries and determine what is permitted within our domain;

This original devotional artwork honors Santa Muerte—Holy Death, a beloved Mexican folk saint and personification of Death. I created the original illustration by hand in ink and paint on vellum, building the image in layers that were later integrated using canva digital software.
Santa Muerte appears enthroned within a candlelit shrine, crowned in roses and radiant golden rays and draped in elaborately embroidered robes. She bears her traditional scythe and globe, accompanied by the owl, hourglass, skulls, rosaries, crucifix, and images of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Her altar overflows with offerings drawn from contemporary Santa Muerte devotion and Mexican traditions of remembrance: candles, copal smoke, tequila, fresh fruit, bread, coins, flowers, roses, and brilliant orange marigolds.
I wanted especially to honor the distinctly Mexican and popular Catholic context from which modern Santa Muerte devotion emerges. Although the Roman Catholic Church does not recognize or approve her veneration, many of Santa Muerte's devotees understand their practice through familiar Catholic forms of prayer, rosaries, saints, crucifixes, candles, and petitions. At the Summer Solstice, the Sun reaches the height of its power, illuminating the world in the fullness of its light. Artist Heron Michelle approaches Litha as more than a celebration of sunshine and abundance: it is an initiatory threshold that asks what becomes visible when nothing within us can remain hidden in shadow.
This original artwork draws upon the ancient Egyptian Weighing of the Heart, the judgment of the deceased described in the funerary traditions commonly known as the Book of the Dead. At the center, Ma’at, goddess and embodiment of truth, justice, right relationship, and cosmic order, holds the scales. Upon them the human heart is weighed against her feather. Anubis attends the weighing; Thoth, divine scribe and keeper of sacred knowledge, records its outcome; Osiris, lord of the dead and renewed life, presides over the mystery; and Ammit, the fearsome Devourer, waits should the heart prove unworthy.
Here, this ancient image becomes a powerful symbol for Litha and the solar mysteries of self-knowledge. At the longest days of the year, we may stand metaphorically beneath the blazing Sun and examine the condition of our own hearts. Are our thoughts, words, choices, and actions in right relationship with the values we claim to hold? What has grown within us during the waxing half of the solar year? What deserves to flourish, and what must be corrected before we begin the long descent toward darkness?
The artwork is framed as an Egyptian temple scene and filled with symbols of solar power, death, resurrection, wisdom, and divine order, including the solar disk, scarab, ankh, crescent, feather of Ma’at, sacred heart, and hieroglyphic-inspired architectural details. Her name translates to “Divine Mind.” Athena represents honorable strength — justice, craftsmanship, civilization, and protection. “For my Imbolc candle Image, I present the God as the Green Lad. He is not yet the fully grown Horned One of Beltane, but is still the young buck full of potential. His antlers, though budding and small, reach skyward like antennae tuned to the future. His hooves break through the crust of snow where roots prepare themselves for thaw. Whereas Brigid sanctifies the inner hearth; he awakens the outer world. Together they form the sacred polarity of High Winter: fire and air, inspiration and impulse, inner knowing and wild potential. As Brigid ignites the witch’s vision, the Green Lad runs ahead, scouting the unseen path, carrying that first spark into the waiting world. Thus the Green Lad becomes a god-form of potential—ideas given shape, innocence infused with purpose. “This candle wrap image is sized for a 7-day sanctuary candle, 7” x 7”. Once applied to a round, blue, glass candle, you view the image by thirds as it is turned. This image is intended to restore the American ideal stated in our pledge of allegiance as “Liberty and Justice for ALL.” I invite you to join me in this working of magickal resistance.
In the center diamond of my image, the Bald Eagle crowns the Greek Goddess Themis, goddess of Justice and Law, who is best known as "Lady Justice." In artwork, she is typically portrayed as blind-folded, holding scales and a sword. My goddess image also has eye's covered by her cloak, holding the scales of justice up to her brow - seeking a justice balanced by Highest Divine Guidance. She grasps her sword in strength, as the balance point between the peace we desire, and the necessary defense of our liberties.
The Diamond border points are like a magickal circle - as above, so below. At the top, the sun and the heavens in balance with the moon and the underworld at the bottom. In the center, planet earth and the middle realms manifest the magick of the candle imagery.
The feathers on the diamond border represent the eagle’s wings in upward flight. The eagle’s head also turns toward the olive branch of peace, which shows thirteen olives and leaves. That desire for peace is balanced by the willingness to defend that peace, represented by the thirteen arrows to the right.
However, my use of 13 isn’t about the original colonies, obviously. Thirteen is a “witch’s dozen.” It is a sacred number within magick, representing the magickal wholeness of the 12 zodiac signs. The zodiac parses out the twelve arenas of consciousness, as three modalities multiplied by the four elemental energies, plus one more. That thirteenth represents our synergistic one-ness. America, too, is much greater than the sum of her parts. Our love affair with “13” also harks back to the 13 lunations within a special “Blue Moon” year.
I also used the seven red stripes to represent the seven Hermetic celestial spheres, which contain the 7 planetary/divine governors of those spheres.
From the outside of the image working inward, the corner symbols may look like an upside down peace sign, but I tap the power of Algiz - a Norse rune of protection. Furthered interlaced by the colors of the four elemental realms, and the 5-pointed pentacle star - symbols of balance and protection of our five-fold selves.

Medusa, the famous Gorgon of Greek mythology, has become a powerful modern symbol of sovereignty, boundaries, protection, and righteous fury. Yet the Medusa depicted in this original artwork reaches beyond the familiar Roman story of a beautiful woman transformed into a monster. In Hesiod’s much earlier Theogony, Medusa is a Gorgon by birth, daughter of the ancient sea divinities Phorkys and Keto and granddaughter of Gaia and Pontos—Earth and Sea. Of the three Gorgon sisters, Medusa alone is mortal, yet her terrible power survives even death.
Her image became one of the ancient Mediterranean world’s most recognizable apotropaic emblems. The gorgoneion, the staring face of the Gorgon, appeared upon temples, armor, jewelry, vessels, and funerary monuments as an image intended to avert danger: a terrifying guardian whose unwavering gaze turns threatening forces away.
This original altar-card design by Heron Michelle draws upon that ancient protective symbolism while developing Medusa through a modern Witchcraft and Hermetic framework as The Gorgon, Defender of Sovereignty.
Medusa appears in three aspects, each associated with a different magickal intention and planetary influence: Allure • Venus • Choice, the sovereign power to choose how we are seen and whom we welcome into our sphere; Command • Saturn • Authority, the power to establish boundaries and determine what is permitted within our domain; and Fury • Mars • Defense, the power to actively defend those boundaries when they are violated.

This original devotional artwork honors Santa Muerte—Holy Death, a beloved Mexican folk saint and personification of Death. I created the original illustration by hand in ink and paint on vellum, building the image in layers that were later integrated using canva digital software.
Santa Muerte appears enthroned within a candlelit shrine, crowned in roses and radiant golden rays and draped in elaborately embroidered robes. She bears her traditional scythe and globe, accompanied by the owl, hourglass, skulls, rosaries, crucifix, and images of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Her altar overflows with offerings drawn from contemporary Santa Muerte devotion and Mexican traditions of remembrance: candles, copal smoke, tequila, fresh fruit, bread, coins, flowers, roses, and brilliant orange marigolds.
I wanted especially to honor the distinctly Mexican and popular Catholic context from which modern Santa Muerte devotion emerges. Although the Roman Catholic Church does not recognize or approve her veneration, many of Santa Muerte's devotees understand their practice through familiar Catholic forms of prayer, rosaries, saints, crucifixes, candles, and petitions. Above all, I sought to portray Santa Muerte as Death made holy, rather than frightening or sinister: to me she is beautiful, inevitable, impartial, and welcoming. Before Holy Death, distinctions of wealth, status, gender, sexuality, and worldly power ultimately fall away. She reminds us that Death comes for us all—and that even at the threshold of mortality, we may encounter mystery, dignity, protection, and sacred acceptance.

Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, and strategy. Born fully armed from the brow of Zeus, Athena embodies clarity of mind united with disciplined will. Her name translates to “Divine Mind.” Athena represents honorable strength — justice, craftsmanship, civilization, and protection. She is a patroness of heroes, artisans, and civic life, guiding both the valor of the warrior and the artistry of the maker. Her symbols express this duality: the owl, with piercing vision in darkness; the olive tree, gift of peace and prosperity; the aegis, her shield bearing the Gorgoneion, warding off evil; and her spear and helmet, emblems of readiness and defense. Ma’at — Truth, Justice, Balance & Divine Order
Invite the sacred principles of truth, justice, balance, reciprocity, and divine order into your devotional and magical practice with this original candle wrap honoring Ma’at, the ancient Egyptian goddess and personification of the cosmic order upon which both divine and human life depend.
In ancient Egyptian religion, Ma’at was more than a goddess in the familiar sense; she was also the principle of rightness itself—the proper ordering of the cosmos, society, relationships, and individual conduct. As the daughter of the solar god Ra, Ma’at accompanied the ordered movement of creation and stood in opposition to isfet: disorder, falsehood, injustice, and destructive chaos. Egyptian rulers were expected to “do Ma’at,” maintaining justice and right order within the human realm as the gods maintained it throughout the cosmos.
Her most recognizable symbol is the ostrich feather, famously associated with the judgment of the dead. In the Weighing of the Heart, the deceased person's heart was measured against the feather of Ma’at. A heart found true and properly balanced could continue into the blessed afterlife; one burdened by wrongdoing faced Ammit, the Devourer, who waits beside the scales. Thoth, divine scribe and god of wisdom, records the result. This imagery makes Ma’at an especially profound divine presence for practices of ethical reflection, accountability, reconciliation, justice, and restoring right relationship.
The artwork places Ma’at with her brilliantly colored outstretched wings above the scales, holding the feather and human heart in perfect tension. Thoth stands as witness and recorder, while Ammit waits opposite him. Behind them rises a lush landscape of papyrus beneath the radiance of the Sun, framed by an Egyptian temple. The four words surrounding the scene—TRUTH • JUSTICE • BALANCE • DIVINE ORDER—express the principal intentions for which this devotional candle was created.
At the center, solar and planetary symbolism connects Ma’at's ancient mysteries with modern Hermetic magical practice, where her principles may be contemplated through ideas of universal law, correspondence, equilibrium, ethical action, and right relationship. The candle is therefore suitable both as a devotional offering to Ma’at and as a ritual focus whenever we seek to bring ourselves, our choices, or our circumstances back into balance.
