I was talking with one of my Sojo friends over the weekend about the magick she is planning. We both want to defend against the atrocities currently threatening our democracy. As she is a former US marine, and also a “Latina Warrior Leo” kinda witch, she was looking for the right balance between the “scales of justice” and the “sharpened sword” of defense. The civil liberties of our friends, families, and neighbors are under siege, so this righteous magick needs some teeth!
My magickal artwork pulls from the original imagery of the Great Seal of the United States of America, created by the Continental Congress on June 20, 1782.
“Symbolically, the Seal reflects the beliefs and values that the Founding Fathers attached to the new nation and wished to pass on to their descendants.”

The Great Seal is a form of magick used by our State Department thousands of times per year. This article and the image below from the American Heritage website describes that symbolism.
In the center diamond of my image, the Bald Eagle crowns the Greek Goddess Themis, goddess of Justice and Law. She is best known as "Lady Justice." In classical artwork, she is typically portrayed as blind-folded, holding scales and a sword. My version is my best attempt at rendering Themis in the likeness of my Latina friend in her cloak. Her eyes are also covered, holding the scales of justice up to her brow chakra- seeking a justice balanced by Highest Divine Guidance. She grasps her sword in strength, hilt at the solar plexis chakra - as the balance point between the peace we desire, and the necessary defense of our liberties.
The diamond border points are like a magickal circle - as above, so below. The top, the sun and the heavens in balance the moon and the underworld on the bottom. In the center, planet earth and the middle realms in balance.
The feathers on the diamond border represent the eagle’s wings in upward flight. The eagle faces the olive branch of peace, which shows thirteen olives and leaves. That desire for peace is balanced by the willingness to defend that peace, represented by the thirteen arrows to the right.
However, my use of thirteen isn’t about the original colonies, obviously. Thirteen is a “witch’s dozen.” It is a sacred number representing the magickal wholeness of the twelve zodiac signs. The zodiac parses out the twelve arenas of consciousness, as three modalities multiplied by the four elemental energies. The thirteenth is our synergistic one-ness. America, too, is much greater than the sum of her parts. Our love affair with “13” also harkens back to the thirteen lunations within a special Blue Moon year.
I also used the seven red and white stripes to represent the seven Hermetic celestial spheres, which contain the seven planetary/divine governors of those spheres.
From the outside of the image working inward, the corner symbols may look like an upside down peace sign, but I tap the power of Algiz, which is a Norse rune of protection, further interlaced by the colors of the four elemental realms, and the 5-pointed pentacle star.
The four keywords at top and bottom are the values this magick weaves into the new age while Pluto transits Aquarius, 2024- 2043.

Lower Right: The courage of planetary Mars, so that we have the strength to defend our rights and values. Si vis pacem, para bellum. “If you desire peace, prepare for war.”
Three of the Latin mottoes are also found on the Seal of the United States. The motto on the Mars panel originates from Roman military theorist Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, in his book "Epitoma Rei Militaris."
I restore to this magick an appeal to the fire of Highest Divine Will to defend our civil rights, liberties, and sovereignty from all threats: no theocracy, fascism or oligarchies allowed.
There are scary, horrific things happening in this nation, only two weeks into the Trump administration’s onslaught. The first concentration camp is already open and receiving detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Musk and the sketchy DOGE tech-bros unconstitutionally seized our sensitive financial data. The FBI has been culled of anyone who dared investigate Trump’s crimes. USAID and Department of Education are on the chopping block already. Our nation is on fire in every way, and it’s going to take more than disgruntled memes to stop the madness.
Y’all. We have to actually “Punch Nazis” again.
Help us, Lady Themis, I pray. Restore integrity and lawfulness to our government - to be OF the people and FOR ALL people once more. Protect our liberty and restore justice - especially justice and legal protection for the women, LGBTQ+ folks, immigrants, people of color, and all at-risk folks of good conscience, who still “love their neighbors,” compassionately and generously.
