In ancient Egyptian religion, Ma’at was more than a goddess in the familiar sense; she was also the principle of rightness itself—the proper ordering of the cosmos, society, relationships, and individual conduct. As the daughter of the solar god Ra, Ma’at accompanied the ordered movement of creation and stood in opposition to isfet: disorder, falsehood, injustice, and destructive chaos. Egyptian rulers were expected to “do Ma’at,” maintaining justice and right order within the human realm as the gods maintained it throughout the cosmos.
Her most recognizable symbol is the ostrich feather, famously associated with the judgment of the dead. In the Weighing of the Heart, the deceased person's heart was measured against the feather of Ma’at. A heart found true and properly balanced could continue into the blessed afterlife; one burdened by wrongdoing faced Ammit, the Devourer, who waits beside the scales. Thoth, divine scribe and god of wisdom, records the result. This imagery makes Ma’at an especially profound divine presence for practices of ethical reflection, accountability, reconciliation, justice, and restoring right relationship.
