Butterfly: The Beauty of Transformation

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
— Maya Angelou

Butterflies are beings that have been at the center of human admiration and fascination for thousands of years. They are beautiful, ethereal, delicate, and bright, capturing our attention whenever they grace our space.

Folklore from around the world associates butterflies with the human soul — the unseeable part of us that is composed of our love, our true purpose, and our essence. Butterflies themselves are at times thought to be physical incarnations of the spirits of loved ones that have passed on, coming to visit us once more.

Butterflies symbolize transformation and joy, and are often thought to be the souls of departed loved ones come to visit us again.

When we surround and adorn ourselves with butterfly imagery, it reminds us of our own personal transformation, the beauty that arises from change, and Spirit. It reminds us to remain joyful, and that there will be positivity and enjoyment at the end of tough journeys.

There are many ways to honor and invite the spiritual energy of butterfly into our lives. First and foremost, butterfly protection and conservation is something that needs our constant help, resources, and attention. Monarch butterflies, native to North America, are facing population decline that becomes more severe every year. To protect them we can plant native varieties of milkweed (their only food source) in our outdoor spaces that are appropriate to your specific area (visit https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/monarch-milkweed-finder to find the variety of milkweed appropriate to your area.) Native plants that are food sources for other butterfly species are also important — visit https://www.nwf.org/Garden-for-Wildlife/Wildlife/Attracting-Butterflies for ideas — and help to grow diverse butterfly populations all around us!

Carrying butterfly symbolism with us keeps their consciousness and imagery within our minds even when they may not physically be present. Butterfly jewelry, statuary, printed art and clothing are all ways which we can keep the spirit of butterfly close by and fresh in our minds.
